ITV Hearts 1999 Unused Ident - Beach







One of the many iterations of the 1999 ITV hearts ident package, the creation of which was fraught with disagreements between the designers, ITV's Network Promotions Unit, and the constituent ITV companies. Designed by English & Pockett with music by Lord David Dundas, as with the previous attempt at generic ITV branding in 1989. A huge amount of footage was shot and many revisions to the ident and music took place. The safer compromise that was eventually agreed on was less impressive than this unused set of idents, and bore little resemblance to the designers' original vision of a more sophisticated visual identity. The fast-moving heart images below the ITV logo were intended to be used as break bumpers; only one of them was ever seen on screen (the heart splashing into water). The original music and its variations were scrapped, with all idents now using a single, string-led tune. The new idents were launched across the network (minus Carlton, UTV, STV and Grampian) in November 1999. Four months into the rebrand, LWT was the first company to ditch the hearts, replacing them with a set of idents based on a video wall. HTV, having been bought from Granada by Carlton in 2000, adopted Carlton's ident package in July 2001, but with HTV's endboard and logo. By the end of 2001, ITV had become ITV1, and sightings of the live action introductions were few and far between.
