Having been raised on the Northwest side of Chicago until the age of 8, Missy English was exposed to music everywhere. At home, at church, in her hood, at work, overseas in England- practically everywhere. She sang 'Going Up Beyonder' (to be with my lord) at an extremely young age with ease, at her family Church of Christ. Having spent so many years in England her friends began to call her Missy, and eventually Missy English because she held on to her English accent as a young girl having lived in England for some time. As a very young girl, her grandpa would sneak her into the bar so she could stand on a table in her sunday dress to sing jazz to the patrons or they would not stay and spend money. While her grandmother shouldn't know anything about this (her grandfather has unfortunately passed away) she is grateful to him for allowing her self expression in singing at such a young age. From there she chose to make a better life for herself and to join the US Navy to escape the harsh realities of the drug and violence ridden community she lived in. Right from the beginning in the US Navy, she was chosen to announce Navy graduations at Daley Center where she used the term 'belay my last' when she made a vocal error in reading the graduation announcement sheet yet continued to speak. The crowd reacted with a quick round of laughter because all military people use the term when having made a speaking error.
