In school, she meets a girl (Lanie), who doesn't speak English, but speaks the same language Jess spoke in her native country before she moved to the USA and then to Macedonia with her family. Jess and Lanie become very good friends. Jess teaches Lanie English. They play dolls together. Jess even gives Lanie her treasured American Girl magazine. Then, one day, Lanie becomes friends with a girl who is much more popular than Jess. She can speak English now, and she can make friends all she wants, because she doesn't need to rely on Jess anymore if she wanted to communicate. So Jess, the girl who taught Lanie English, gets left behind for a girl who is much more popluar than her. It turns out, Lanie was just using her. She only needed Jess to teach her English. Lanie never needed Jess' friendship. She was only using the poor girl who loved her very much. When Jess realizes that Lanie was only using her, she starts crying. She sees two friends, who are very happy. She becomes even more miserable. She goes home and lays down on her bed, disappointed in the world. Her doll falls down off her bed. She remembers the long hours she and Lanie spent together playing with her dolls. She still couldn't belive that Lanie had abbandoned her. At Lanie's house, she and her new friend.
